The ZHCT mechanism <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">was\nfunded by the U.S. President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through\nthe United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Zimbabwe.\nBetween September 24<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Poppins;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">, 2015, to January 31<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Poppins;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">,\n2022, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;color:black;\nmso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">FHI 360 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">mechanism contributed significantly to the national\nHIV and AIDS response in Zimbabwe, of which the overall goal was to increase\navailability and quality of comprehensive HIV care and treatment (C&amp;T)\nservices, towards the national achievement of HIV epidemic control. These\ninitial objectives contributed to that goal:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n <li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\n     mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">&nbsp;Increase the\n     availability of quality comprehensive C&amp;T services for HIV-positive\n     persons at community level; and<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n <li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\n     mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">Strengthen community-level\n     health systems to monitor, track and retain persons living with HIV\n     (PLHIV) in care.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">Then from October 1<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Poppins;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">,\n201<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;color:black;\nmso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">7<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">, it incorporated the Zimbabwe&nbsp;<i>Determined, Resilient, Empowered,\nAIDS- Free, Mentored, and Safe&nbsp;<\/i>(DREAMS) project. The DREAMS project\naimed to reduce new HIV infections amongst adolescent girls and young women\n(AGYW) aged 10-24 years, including both school-based and community-based\ninterventions, anchored on layering of services. Its strategic objectives were\nas follows:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n <li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\n     mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">Through a holistic\n     leadership program, empower adolescents and youth adopt healthy lifestyle\n     practices that reduce new HIV infection and promote healthy living.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n <li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\n     mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW\">Address socio-cultural,\n     religious, and legal barriers that increase vulnerability to HIV and\n     impede access to services for adolescents and youths in Zimbabwe.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;\nmso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;color:black;mso-ansi-language:EN-ZW;\nmso-fareast-language:EN-ZW;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\">ZHI implemented, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">C&amp;T component of the\naward was implemented in <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;\nmso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;color:black;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-ZW;mso-fareast-language:EN-ZW;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\">nine\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\">districts <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Poppins;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;\nmso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;color:black;mso-ansi-language:EN-ZW;\nmso-fareast-language:EN-ZW;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\">first in Manicaland and\nthen<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Poppins;\"> Midlands, while\nDREAMS activities were conducted in twelve districts across five provinces\n(Manicaland, Midlands, Bulawayo, Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South).\nUnder the ZHCT Mechanism, ZHI provided both technical assistance (TA) and\ndirect service delivery (DSD) to complement the Ministry of Health and Child\nCare\u2019s (MOHCC\u2019s) response to the HIV\/AIDS epidemic in the country.
